Mixing serious and recreational posts

Posted on Jul 1st, 2007 by janos : Practical philosopher janos
I find Zaadz space still confusing. The write up about Zaadz Lounge (the "uber" pod) says that it is "a place for relaxing and chatting." So it is replete with recreational posts and small talk issues. So the occasional entries about "serious" concerns get rather hidden under the general hubbub.

I suppose it would be too much to ask for a facility allowing copies to be made in one's own space of only items of interest to oneself. To overcome this lack I will experiment with copying the links to my favourite posts on which I might want to comment arranged under a few collective headings.

Janos,

I've read your blog postings with some interest, and would like to call out a distinction that I think can help shed some light on your conundrums at large.

You seem to have a strong bias for action. Action in deed, as opposed to action in thought, though I am convinced you recognize the power in both. It is important to look at any population and understand that basic distributions apply. Pareto's Principle, or the 80/20 rule is at the crux of change agency and societal evolution. Thusly 20% of the people in this space will result in 80% of the change this space creates. The gyrations of forum dialog, while important, have already defined who you are speaking to. Those with a predilection for action, are likely not jockeying in the forums. If the forums do however galvanize the actions of even 2 people in 10, the expense is well worth it. I understand your observations, particularly in the context of other posts I've seen from you, and agree with the general lament that this (zaadz) is not the most effective venue for social change.

My counsel to all those who feel encumbered or slighted by the culture they are a part of is to own the changes you want (which you clearly are). I like the progressive attitude you are taking to make that a reality, Perhaps we should consider a pod that links to the “valuable” posts from many other pods, and create essentially a discussion aggregator.

A few other considerations around zaadz becoming a change agent. The new age spiritual movement that this representative of the beliefs of many(most) of the members here exist in a context that is not soluble to the general population at large. Finding a way to share these beliefs in a context that is neutral to most is going to be the single greatest endeavor this place should choose to undertake. Anything else creates a special message for a special group, and therefore limits our impact to the members of the group.

I am hopeful for us all because of proactive thinkers like yourself.

Warmest regards,
Wiseman
